No animal shall be adopted from the City of Watauga Animal Service Center without the completion of a signed contract.   

1)   The Animal Services Division may decline to place any animal at the Animal  Service Center up for adoption based on temperament, health, age, behavior, or past history.  

2)   The Animal Services Division may not discriminate against a perspective owner based on age, race, religion, ethnicity or nationality. 

3)    Adoption may be declined to any individual who has refused to comply with the City Ordinances of Watauga in regards to an animal in his/her care.  

4)   All adopters shall sign the adoption contract, stating that the animal adopted shall be spayed or neutered and vaccinated against rabies within thirty (30) days of the adoption.  Animal Services may extend the deadline only when a written report from a veterinarian indicated that an extension is necessary for the health of the animal.  

5)    Individuals that reside in an apartment, rental home, or other property owned by someone other than the adopter are required to show proof of paid pet deposit or other pet agreement.  The written proof must include contact information for the property owner that can be verified by Watauga Animal Services.  

6)     The fee for adoption will be set by City Council. 

Procedures

1)    Once an individual selects an animal for adoption, the adopter shall complete the appropriate paperwork.  The adopter shall provide his/her name, address, telephone number, and valid driver’s license or ID card.   

2)   The selected animal shall be heartworm tested (if the animal is a dog over six months of age), microchipped, given a dose of intestinal worming medication, and either a feline (FRCP) vaccination or canine (DA2PPv) vaccination.   

3)  The adopter will be advised to take the pet to their veterinarian, at the adopter’s expense, as soon as possible to have the animal examined and for advice as to what preventative measures and vaccinations are necessary to keep the animal in good health.
