Special Volunteer Programs |
Assistant Shelver
Accuracy and ability to sort and arrange items into alphabetical and
numerical order required. Volunteer will sort items on a cart and
place in order; may shelve media and paperbacks, does shelf reading
on an assigned section of shelving, keeping the items in good order.
Children’s Department
Shelf-reader - If you enjoy detail work and putting things in order,
you can be of great help in keeping the children’s books in order.
Desk assistant -- Love of children required and some database
experience to have the ability to learn the catalog system, as you
fill in at the Youth Desk.
Homework Help Center Tutor
Teen and adult volunteers work one on one with students in grades
1-6 on Tuesdays 3:45-5:45 and/or Thursdays 5:30-7:30 p.m. Teens
should be in the National Honor Society or have high academic
grades. Volunteers who speak English/Spanish are especially needed.
Volunteers assist students with their homework.
Laubach Way to English Tutor
Volunteers receive 16 hours training in the Laubach Way to English
method and are matched with an adult student who wants to learn
English. Student and tutor meet in the library at a time agreeable
to both. Typical commitment is 1-2 hours a week for an extended
period. There is no need to speak another language. Student and
tutor materials are provided by literacy grants from the United Way
of Tarrant County, Literacy for Libraries, and Dollar General
Literacy Foundation .
ESL Instructor
Qualified English as a Second Language instructors are needed to
lead a conversational English class at beginning, intermediate or
advanced level. Daytime or evening classes can be arranged. Teachers
without the ESL certification are eligible if willing to attend 16
hours of Laubach Way to English tutor training.
Teacher’s Aide, Adult Conversational English class
Teaching or tutoring experience is not required, though it is a
plus. Volunteers will assist the instructor with the class and be
able to substitute in case of her absence. The class meets on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30-7:30
p.m. This program is funded by literacy grants from the NTRLS
Libraries for Literacy and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Office Assistant
(Circulation and Technical Services)
Filing, stamping cards, physically processing books, checking in
magazines and other routine tasks. Volunteer must enjoy detail work
and understand the importance of accuracy and neatness.
Friends Book Nook
Sort donated and discarded books and media for the Friends of the
Library Book Nook. Two hours once a week is typical. A benefit is
the chance to be first to see what is available!
Computer instructor
Teach a small group class or assist with a class, such as beginners,
Word, Excel, or how to do job searching online.
Book Club Moderator
Lead a small book discussion group, such as a mystery book club or a
general interest group, daytime or evening. 1-2 times a month.
