General Programming Guidelines

The Watauga Public Library offers two types of preschool programming: Toddletime for children ages 18-36 months and Storytime for children 3-5. Our programming goal is to provide you and your child with an enjoyable library experience based on books and language.  The following suggestions will help us reach that goal:

  1. Please plan to arrive on time.  Young children are easily distracted and latecomers become the focus of attention.

  2. Consider discussing participation activities before you come.  You may want to explain that you will be listening to stories and reciting rhymes and sing-a-longs.

  3. If your child becomes uneasy or disruptive, please leave the room as quietly as possible.  This will minimize the distraction for everyone.

Toddler Storytime (ages 18 - 36 months)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays

10:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Toddletime is a participatory program for caregivers and children ages 18-36 months.  Toddletime programs include age appropriate books, puppets, songs, fingerplays and feltboard stories.  Stories are repeated on Wednesdays.  Click here for a list of current titles.

Preschool Storytime (ages 3 - 5 years)

Tuesdays & Wednesdays

10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Storytime programs are planned with the 3-5 year old children in mind - their attention span, interest, and experiences.  Children younger than 3 are often not developmentally ready to sit and listen quietly, so we would encourage you to bring younger children to Toddletime.  You are welcome to attend Storytime with your child.  Parents must remain in the library during Storytime in the event of an emergency.  Stories are repeated on Wednesdays.  We've got a terrific time planned for you and your youngster - please come and join the fun!  Click here for a list of current titles.

Resources in Espaņol

A core collection of books called "Rosaura's Bookshelf", videos, DVDs, and CDs is located in the children's section.

Youth Clubs

Several Youth Clubs are available at the Library.  Click here to view a list of those currently being offered.

Birthday Book Club

Help your child or grandchild celebrate their birthday by donating $20.00 towards the purchase of a new book for the Library.  The donor may request a specific book title, or the Children's Librarian may select a book for you.  When a book is donated in honor of a birthday, there is a special effort to honor the gift.  A bookplate will be placed on the inside cover of the book with the name and birthday of your child.  After the book has been processed, the birthday honoree is the first to check it out.  Please make checks payable to the Friends of the Watauga Library.  For more details, call the Children's Librarian at (817) 514-5866.  Click here for a printable form.

Computers

The library has computers available for use by young people.  Eight (8) CD-ROM Interactive Terminals are available. Sign-In is required.  Microsoft Word and Excel are available with a color printer (copies $.10 per page).  Instruction is available for on-line searching of the Public Access Catalog.

Library Etiquette and Safety

  1. Food and drink are not allowed in the library.

  2. Appropriate behavior includes no running or jumping.

  3. The City of Watauga requires that shoes be worn in the building.

  4. Young children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  5. Quiet voices are requested.  If your child is not using an indoor voice, please explain that many people use the library to read and to study and that it is polite to speak softly when you visit.

Unattended & Disruptive Children Policy

The Watauga Public Library welcomes children to use its facilities and services. However, responsibility for children using the Library rests with the parent/guardian or assigned chaperon, not with Library personnel.
