Message from the MayorI hope everyone had an outstanding Thanksgiving and had the opportunity to spend some time with family and friends. December is finally here and the end of another year is fast approaching.
It certainly has been a whirlwind this past 12 months. It has been like nothing most of us have experienced before. COVID and the pandemic have changed our lives in so many ways. Some of those changes will carry well into the new year and possibly far beyond. As a city we had to make some very difficult decisions as well. The one positive thing that we should take from this pandemic it is our resiliency as a community, a state and a nation. We have adapted to the limitations that COVID has forced upon us. It has made us look at many of the everyday things we do from a different perspective. Zoom meetings, virtual classrooms, virtual home offices and curbside pickup are now the norm. And our “virtual” world continues to expand more and more every day. I have discovered that online grocery shopping is a huge timesaver and although I miss the social interactions of seeing friends and constituents in the store, it does cut down on my impulse buying habits. So I guess that’s another positive we can take from this. Yes, things are different.
But let’s not allow that to deter us from enjoying this holiday season. This is the time for family and friends. It is a great time of the year. We can still enjoy all the things that make this time of the year special. Have your family members over. Have friends and coworkers over. Just please, do it responsibly. There are family members I will only see virtually this year strictly out of precaution. But those I can see “safely”, I will. I encourage each and every one of you to do your best to make this holiday season as close to normal as possible.
With that, we will be having our annual Christmas Tree Lighting virtually this year. See the Recreation Department FB page for details. Our Fire Department will also be hosting a food and toy drive. The pandemic has impacted many families this year so if you are one of the fortunate ones please help out. See their FB page as well. Don’t forget our furry friends at the animal shelter. Puppies and kittens make great Christmas gifts.
I will close with wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous and Happy New Year. Please remember those serving that will be unable to be with their families and loved ones this season.

Capp Smith Story WalkWe’ve finally reached the perfect autumnal temperature outside—making a walk in the park a breeze. So take advantage of this lovely weather to get some exercise in and…some reading!
Currently, the Library has a Story Walk available in Capp Smith Park where you can walk along the trails, socially distanced, while reading along to a family-friendly story. Each set of pages is mounted to a stake in the ground, so to continue the story all you need to do is continue your walk!
If you finish our Story Walk, please stop by the Library via Curbside Pickup for a special treat. Just let us know that you read the story and what you thought—and we’ll grab your prize!

Finding Books More Books Using Subject Headings
The winter months are perfect for staying in and reading. If you’ve found that you’ve already read through your stash of books—and the pile of recommended reads from your friends—we have a simple fix to help you find more books to read (that you’ll hopefully enjoy)!
Find a book in our catalog that you enjoyed and that contains themes or subjects that interest you. When in the record of that book, take a look at the subject or genre headings. These are the links found underneath the summary of the book. You can click through those headings to find a selection of books that are also cataloged in the same subject.
This is a simple and fast way to discover more books within the Library’s catalog. The best part is that you’ll be in the right place to place a hold when you discover your next read!

Virtual Fall and Winter Reading ChallengesSummer isn't the only break for reading! Join the Watauga Public Library in reading this fall and winter season on Beanstack to win prizes for the reading and activities you complete.
What is “Beanstack”? Beanstack is the Library’s web-based software that allows you to track your reading and activities.
How do I sign up?
1. Go to https://wataugatx.beanstack.org/
2. Click on the blue “Register an Individual or Family” button.
3. Fill in the information! If you are a parent registering a child, be sure to enter your information in under “Adult Information.” Beanstack allows a family’s separate accounts to be linked together so that all family members can be accessed with one login.
4. Once you are registered, you will be taken to your account page. This is where you will log your reading and activities and track the badges you earn!
Go to https://wataugatx.beanstack.org/ or download the Beanstack Tracker app for Android and iPhone!

Virtual Family Place WorkshopWatauga Public Library is a part of the Family Place Libraries initiative which includes a network of over 400 libraries in 29 states. Family Place builds on what the library already does for young children ages 1-3 to help ensure each child gets the best start in life. Each workshop will give parents/caregivers an opportunity to ask local experts questions about their child’s development. Our Family Place Workshop series is a total of 5 weeks and 5 sessions. Each week focuses on a different topic such as: - Week 1: Speech, Hearing, & Language Development with Sonya Kallinikos of ECI
- Week 2: Early Literacy with Watauga Public Library Youth Services Librarians
- Week 3: Music, Physical, and Movement Development with Diane West of ECI
- Week 4: Child Development with Lisa Self of TCCC
- Week 5: Nutrition with Amy Nelson of WIC
This year because of COVID-19 our Family Place workshops will be held virtually where parents can connect with resources, programs and services offered at the library and other family services agencies. This is a sign up event, please fill out google form to choose which workshop you would like to attend or attend them all! https://forms.gle/UeygDLshreLaKGVZ8
