Message from the Mayor

HAPPY NEW YEAR, WATAUGA! Hello 2021 and GOODBYE 2020. I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and an opportunity to spend time with their families and friends, be it in person or virtually.

   We cannot fully embrace the new year without some reflection on the year we are putting behind us. This time last year the word pandemic was something we heard in a movie. Today it is a reality. The global pandemic has impacted every one of us in some manner and virtually every aspect of our lives. 2020 was a tough year on all of us. But we have adapted and made it through. As I have said numerous times, I believe we are stronger both as a Nation and as a community. I also believe that 2021 holds a bright future for all of us. We now have a vaccine for the Corona Virus. It was produced in record time and is now being distributed to those on the frontlines and should be available to the rest of us soon. We also have a second round of stimulus checks coming. Locally, our economy has fared better than we anticipated, we have new businesses moving in and more being new business attraction results working. We have much to be thankful for with the new year ahead.

   2021 will still be a challenging year. As it stands right now all meetings and events for the month of January will remain virtual. Also, in advance of the projected post-holiday spike in COVID numbers we have proactively restricted access to city facilities thru January 10^th. I hope to return to “in person” meetings in February.

   January also kicks off another election cycle for the City, including a general and special elections. It seems like we just did that not long ago. Filing period for the General Election will be January 13 - February 12, 2021. See the city website for details or contact the City Secretary’s office.

   Here is to a happy, safe and prosperous New Year to everybody.

Christmas Trees Removal – Trees only!

Pick-up will be on the first two Monday’s in January (4th & 11th), provided that such trees are placed within five (5) feet of the curb and out no later than 7:00 a.m.

If you happen to miss this pick-up you will have to place the trees out on your regular scheduled bulk pick-up day.

Celebrating Black Voices: A Choose-Your-Own-Path Reading Extravaganza!

Arguably one of the best parts of reading is finding yourself within the pages of a book. Seeing characters that resemble your friends or finding yourself in dinner scenes that could've taken place at your own home. Even seeing the smallest details of life such as what someone brings to school for lunch can make us feel seen and known.

Another one of the best parts is exploring spaces and lives outside of our own.
For this Beanstack challenge, we want to highlight and celebrate Black authors and uplift their voices. We hope that you find an author (or a few—or many!) that you want to read from included on our list. We hope that you see yourself in their works—or simply find yourself enraptured with their words.

This challenge is for all ages and the authors listed within this challenge range from picture book to classic lit authors. We've also included some "free spaces" where you can insert your own author choice.

The challenge goes from January 18, 2021 - February 28, 2021. To complete this challenge (and receive a prize), you'll need to read from five authors! Your prize can be picked up upon completion via Curbside Pickup.

Please note: Prizes will need to be picked up from the Library. Prizes will not be mailed/shipped.

Virtual Juggling Class- Stay Home, Stay Safe, and Get Active!

Ever wondered how you can learn to juggle? Bring your own balls and join our online interactive instruction. Juggling increases coordination, peripheral vision, and communication between both hemispheres of the brain so it’s a great workout for both body & mind!
For the perfect juggling experience, use juggling balls or try hacky sacks or oranges. Tennis balls are too light and bouncy and you'd be chasing the balls more than learning to juggle.
Class will be given via Zoom and participants are asked to stay muted until called upon, but we will try to give each person some attention. The class will be held on Saturday, January 23^rd from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
We look forward to this fun journey! Call the library at 817-514-5865 to reserve your spot! This is the perfect class for adults, kids, and families.

New year, new reading goals!

Join the Watauga Public Library in reading this new year on Beanstack to win prizes for the reading and activities you complete.

What is “Beanstack”? Beanstack is the Library’s web-based software that allows you to track your reading and activities.

How do I sign up?

1. Go to https://wataugatx.beanstack.org/

2. Click on the blue “Register an Individual or Family” button.

3. Fill in the information! If you are a parent registering a child, be sure to enter your information in under “Adult Information.” Beanstack allows a family’s separate accounts to be linked together so that all family members can be accessed with one login.

4. Once you are registered, you will be taken to your account page. This is where you will log your reading and activities and track the badges you earn!
