Message from the Mayor:

Fall is finally here and with it the much-awaited cooler temperature. Fall is Mother Nature’s way of reminding us that winter is closing in. Hang on to your hats and hope we don’t have another snovid.

To me, November is the start of the holiday season. It means Thanksgiving. It is a time to take stock of the many blessings we enjoy as well as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

We kick off the month with Constitutional Joint Elections. Early voting started in October with election day on Tuesday November 2nd. There are many important issues on the ballot including alcohol sales in Watauga. You can access sample ballots at the Tarrant County website. Be informed and exercise your right to vote. Your vote is your voice.
Next, we’ll bid farewell to daylight savings time. Set your clocks back an hour on the 7th. This is where we gain one extra hour of sleep, and it takes 2 weeks for your system to adapt to the change. On a positive note. It does give us an extra hour on the golf course, skate park or other activity.

Veterans Day is Thursday the 11th of November. Originally designated Armistice Day in recognition of the end of World War I. In 1926 Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance and just 12 short years later it officially became a national holiday. It is THE day to pay tribute to all American Veterans who have honorably served their country in both war and peacetime and the sacrifices they made. Sacrifices? Ask a veteran what that means to them. In war or peace, they made many. It is the sacrifices of these men and women that make America what it is. For those that have not visited our Veterans Memorial at Capp Smith Park, I encourage you to do so. The Recreation Department will host its Veterans Day celebration on the 11th this year. Details are still being worked out  but will be published once completed.

Our Splash Pad has closed for the season but there are still many activities available with our Library and Recreation Departments. For those who take part in The Mayors Book Club, we have chosen Charlotte’s Web as our next book. We will meet in January. I look forward to seeing everybody there. And bring a friend.

Enjoy the holidays and as always, as we sit around the table with friends and family, please take a moment to remember those that are unable to be with theirs.

Native Plants for North Texas

Native Plants for North Texas Online Class

Create a lush Texas yard by choosing tough plants that are native to our region!

Join our free online class to learn how! https://ntxnativeplants.eventbrite.com

Native Texas plants thrive in our harsh local climate and soils. Native and low water use does not mean cacti and gravel. North Texas is home to thousands of beautiful flowers, grasses, bushes, and trees, all perfectly adapted to live with little to no care. Whether you want a traditional suburban yard or an extravagant butterfly garden, using native Texas plants and resource conscious design principles can help you get the best yard on the block without too much effort.

Learn about:

  • Why it is beneficial to plant native plants
  • The basic principles of landscape design
  • Native perennial flowers, wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees
  • How to choose and find native plants for your yard
  • Which plants need less water and maintenance
  • Ways to use native plants to create beautiful gardens

The class will be 45-minutes long and taught by a Tarrant County Master Gardener.

After registering, check your email for instructions on how to join the live online event.

Parent Child Workshop at Watauga Public Library – Through November 12 @ 10AM

This autumn, join WPL, local experts, and other caregivers in our Parent Child Workshop!
The focus of the Parent Child Workshop is on the parent and child together. The goal of the workshop is for the parent or caregiver to follow the child’s lead as they explore all the different activities and materials within the room. There are purposefully no adult sized chairs in the room to encourage adults to get on the floor and play, talk, sing and read with the children. This is their time together.
The workshop runs until November 12 with meetings on Friday mornings at 10AM. If you sign up for the workshop, please aim to be present each week! The workshop topics are targeted towards pre-walkers and/or toddlers. Each week will host a different expert in-residence—with topics from early literacy to nutrition.
Workshop slots are limited. Inquire with the Youth Department at 817-514-5866.
