MEET WATAUGA'S NEW CITY MANAGER

The City of Watauga welcomes new City Manager Joshua Jones! Mr. Jones' first day with the City of Watauga was January 3, 2022.

Mr. Jones has spent his 13-year career in local government in the role of City Manager or Assistant City Manager. Mr. Jones joins the city after serving as Assistant City Manager for the City of Converse, TX. He began his career in 2009 as City Manager in the City of Hale Center, TX, where he was the city’s first-ever professional city manager. Following this, he was City Manager of Joshua, TX, from 2015-2020.

He is a member of and has received the “Credentialed Manager” designation from the International City/County Management Association and is a member of the Texas City Management Association. He’s also been involved with numerous local organizations in the communities where he has served including YMCA, Lions Club and other volunteer organizations. He has a bachelor’s degree in history, with a minor in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from Texas Tech University.

Jones states, “I’m very excited for the opportunity to join the great team here in Watauga. I’m humbled by the City Council placing its trust and confidence in me to lead the city forward as we continue our mission of delivering an exceptional quality of life for all who live, visit or operate a business in here.”

Texas Court Clerks Association recognized Senior Court Clerks Guadalupe Calvillo and Court Clerk Magenta Landers as outstanding “front line” employees.

CITY OF WATAUGA COURT CLERKS RECOGNIZED WITH FRONT LINE AWARD

The Texas Court Clerks Association, North Texas Chapter, recognized Senior Court Clerks Guadalupe Calvillo and Court Clerk Magenta Landers as outstanding “front line” employees. This excellence award was presented in December, 2021. Guadalupe and Magenta were recognized for their exceptional accomplishments and service, and for their attitude towards those they serve, their willingness to take on new challenges, their support of other team members, and their creativity and resourcefulness in assisting others daily.

Message from the Mayor:

With January behind us we head into February. But first, a quick recap of the first month of 2022:

Our new City Manager started with us the 3rd of January. As I mentioned before Mr. Jones comes to us by way of Converse and Joshua Texas. He is fitting right in, and we expect great things in our future. We also welcomed in new legal counsel. David Berman of Nichols, Jackson, Dillard, Hager and Smith will be providing for our legal services going forward. Also, Watauga’s very own Fire Chief Shawn Fannan and Driver/Engineer James Vieau completed the international designation process from the Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC). Congratulations to them both! Chief Fannan becomes one of only 1,594 Chief Fire Officers worldwide; Driver/Engineer Vieau becomes one of only 601 Fire Officer designees worldwide! Achieving this designation is a testament to their commitment to their careers in fire and emergency services and to the City of Watauga.

On to February. Decreed by President Gerald Ford in 1976, “Black History Month” is celebrated February 1st to March 1st. It is an opportunity to better understand black history and to spotlight black achievement. We also celebrate Presidents Day on the 21st.

The annual Daddy Daughter Sweetheart Dance will be held on the 11th at the Hector F. Garcia Community Center. See the recreation department Facebook page for details.

The 18th of this month will be the last day to file an application for city council general elections (Place 1,2,6 and 7) and Place 5 special election. See the City Website details. The election will be on the 7th of May. Expect to see campaign signs and banners soon.

Mother Nature was kind to us this last month, but it looks like winter is going to hit us in short order with single digits and the possibility of snow and ice. It is not looking to be another Snovid like last year, but be prepared and have a contingency plan.

Lastly, do not forget that the 14th of February is Valentines Day.
