Message from the Mayor: SEPTEMBER….The end of a long hot summer is in sight. And what a summer it has been! It officially ends on September 22nd, but the forecast shows the worst of the temperatures are over. We finished out the summer months with a total of 44 days over the century mark. July was the worst (and my electric bill can confirm it), with 27 days of 100 degrees plus and the longest consecutive streak of 15 days. June had only five days, and August had 12. I am definitely ready for the cooler weather and maybe even a bit of rain. We can only hope. August recap…………….Congratulations to……….. The Senior Center on their its 38th anniversary. Great job by the Recreation Department. Watauga Animal Services for a record month in animal adoptions, 39 adoptions and another 12 animals transferred to other pet rescue organizations. Hats off to you. School is back in full swing. Watch for school buses picking up and dropping off. Also, be aware that Whitley Elementary has a new/different traffic pattern due to all the construction. Give the kids a break; their safety is more important than any phone call or text message. September brings a grim reminder of one of the most tragic days in American history, a day we refer to as 9/11. It has been 21 years since the attack. Although painful to remember, it is an event that current and future generations need to be reminded of. For those that do not know, our Fire Department has a 9/11 memorial which includes a section of steel from one of the twin towers. As is customary, our Fire Department will conduct the “Ringing of the Bells” on the 11th. “NEVER FORGET”! September also brings us Labor Day. This is an American celebration of the achievements and contributions that all workers have made to this great country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882. And in typical government fashion, it became an official legal holiday just 12 short years later, on June 28th, 1894. Some things never change. Lastly, a reminder that the Mayors Book Club will meet at 6:00 PM on the 19th in the library. “The Great Pet Heist” by Emily Ectom is our 3rd book of the summer. So, kids, bring your parents and join us for some good conversation (and snacks). Remember those not fortunate enough to be with their families and loved ones this holiday weekend. Family, Friends, and Neighbors, it’s what makes Watauga “A Great Place to Live.”
