Message from the Mayor

July is behind us and that means the "dog days of August" lie ahead. We've been lucky so far with very few days in the triple digits. Here's hoping that our luck holds out.

The beginning of August also means another new school year is upon us. The first day of school for students in Watauga will be as follows:

Birdville ISD - August 24th
Keller ISD - August 26th

Tarrant County has approved 1.3 million dollars in Corona Virus relief funds for the City of Watauga. That will go a long way in recovering some of our costs incurred by the pandemic.

Construction has finally begun on the long awaited Capp Smith Park splash pad (this project was originally approved and fully funded by council in 2017 but was delayed in hopes of acquiring grant monies from the State). The project is slated to be completed in January 2021 (see the City Webpage for complete schedule of construction).  Once completed this will be an excellent addition to our already outstanding parks system.

Also this month our Animal Services Department will take part in another "clear the shelter" event. This months' event will run for 6 days instead of the normal 1 day. It is a great deal for anyone looking to get a pet but an even better deal for the one pet hoping for a 2nd chance at a loving family. Who knows, you may even find a chicken.

Lastly, please continue to follow all the recommendations/mandates concerning the COVID 19 pandemic. Masks, social distancing, avoiding crowds and washing hands frequently are the best ways to help stop the spread of the virus. Remember family, friends and neighbors......it's what makes Watauga a great place to live.

Thank you to the Friends of the Watauga Public Library!

We at the Library want to send a big shout out to the Friends of the Watauga Public Library!  When the COVID-19 virus hit it really capsized our plans for the annual Summer Reading Program.  Our usual approach to educational events and funds for reading prizes were challenged.  Also, we needed to come up to speed on producing online programs (fast).  We were not satisfied with the quality of our personal cellphones and makeshift audio.  The President of the Friends, Joe Bailey, learned of our situation and came to our aid!   A grant to the Library from the Friends provided funds for updated video equipment, paid for performers, reading prizes and crafts! We will be truly excited to share our new, enhanced videos with you!

Summer Reading Club Continues Through August

Don't miss out on an exciting new way to participate in our summer reading club this year. The library is using an online tool called Beanstack to track your reading for a chance to earn prizes through August 28th. You can access and record your reading using a device and internet connection. You can also participate in fun at-home activities (i.e. baking, bird watching, family game night, and more).

Watch library events and performances from the comfort of your own home via the library's social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). Our summer reading club is for all ages, and that includes adults too! There's something for everyone!

Here's just a small sampling of the library's online events for August: Unicorn Day, Greek Gods and Goddesses Day, Anime and You, Geocaching, Yarn Art, Office Trivia, and more!

Plus, every Friday stop by the library for curbside pick-up of Take-and-Make crafts for kids, tweens, and teens/adults. Call 817-514-5866 when you arrive in the parking lot, and someone will bring the crafts out to your car.

Click here for full details on all the August events and to sign up for Beanstack to record your reading and earn prizes.

By the way, paper reading logs will be still be available for people that do not have internet access or for those who prefer participating on paper. These may be picked up curbside, Monday-Friday between 10am and 6pm.
