October Newsletter - 2017

Mayor's Message

The month of October brings with it early fall and indication that the winter months are fast approaching.  As with the change of any season, the beginning of fall reminds us to start preparing early for the coming winter months.  Make sure your homes are properly maintained and weatherized.  Items to check are your roof, heating unit, electrical outlets, air filters, doors, windows, outdoor and indoor pipes, and your homes’ exterior.  We all need to be ready for the unpredictable Texas weather!  This month will also bring Halloween on Tuesday the 31st, so please make sure to drive safely and watch for all the children and parents as they “Trick-or-Treat”.  Don’t forget to join us at the many events available during this month!  These events truly bring our community together and make Watauga, “A Great Place to Live.”

Construction Updates

TEXRail will be closing all lanes of Rufe Snow Drive at the railroad crossing just north of Iron Horse Boulevard from 7 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 5. The closure will allow contractors to replace the railroad tracks that cross the road. If you travel on Rufe Snow Drive, be prepared to take an alternate route to avoid delays. Traffic will be detoured via Mid Cities and Iron Horse Boulevard. While driveway access will remain open to businesses along Rufe Snow Drive, there will be absolutely no through traffic. Cars proceeding on Rufe Snow will encounter roadblocks at the railroad crossing and will be forced to u-turn. If you must travel Rufe Snow, please follow the detour signs and expect delays. Contractors will be working round the clock to complete the work during the specified time period. The Cotton Belt hike and bike trail will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists during this work. Find more information about TEXRail and sign up for construction updates.

National Community Planning Month

National Community Planning Month

The achievements of planning are celebrated in October with National Community Planning Month. This year's theme — Innovation in Planning — underscores the important role planning plays in addressing and adapting to challenges faced by communities in the 21st century. Innovation is everything from using data sources and technology to address issues — including inequality, access to transportation, and social mobility — to celebrating new approaches to creating communities of lasting value.

Solar Eclipse

Watauga Celebrates Solar Eclipse

On August 21, 2017, the US experienced a total solar eclipse and here in Watauga, we had two residents set up in Capp Smith to share their love of the eclipse and all things celestial with the community. Stan Chambers and Wayne Jennings came around 9:30 am to set up their eclipse viewer and throughout the day delighted park goers by sharing their viewer and eclipse glasses.

Mark your calendars now for the next total solar eclipse is seven years away with prime viewing in north Texas on April 8, 2024.
