Message from the Mayor Pro Tem

We started the New Year dedicated to the growth and development in Watauga. During the month of January, we participated in multiple workshops with various planning and development boards from within Watauga. Through these workshops, we were able to generate new and creative ways to bring growth and new opportunities to our city.
The Watauga Daddy, Daughter Valentine’s Dance is on February 8th at the Hector Garcia Community Center. Tickets are $20 per dad and daughter and $10 for each additional daughter. We hope to see all of you there on this special night of fun. Remember, registration is required.
On March 12th, the City of Watauga and Sertoma Club of Watauga will host the inaugural Hector F. Garcia Memorial Golf Tournament.  All details to the event are listed on the Parks and Community Services Webpage.

I am very excited to announce that the first ever Watauga, State of the City Address will be held on March 20th  from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Our City Manager, Andrea Gardner will address the City’s recent accomplishments, upcoming projects and the future vision for our City.  Access to the event will be via RSVP ONLY.  Please fill out the RSVP Form to let staff know you will be attending as seating is limited.

Proposed 2019 - Water and Sewer Rates

The City of Watauga City Council will hold a public hearing commencing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019, at Watauga City Hall, 7105 Whitley Road, Watauga, Texas 76148 for the purpose of giving interested persons an opportunity to express views on the following schedule of rates for water and sewer service in the City of Watauga which are proposed to become effective March 1, 2019.

The proposed increases to water and sewer rates are for the purpose of covering costs to operate, maintain, repair and improve the water and sewer system and infrastructure.  The proposed water and sewer base rates will increase by $1.50 per service.  Volume charges per 100 cubic feet are proposed to increase by $0.10 per 100 cubic feet for water consumption and $0.09 per cubic feet for sewer treatment (based on current rates for non-senior residential and commercial customers).  The impact of the rate adjustments on an average residential customer who uses 6,000 gallons, or 802 cubic feet is an increase of approximately $4.22 per month.  Individual bills will vary by customer based on consumption.

Senior Discount- Residential customers who have attained the age of 65 and reside in owner-occupied property within the City are eligible for a $5.00 discount for water service and a $5.00 discount for sewer service on their monthly bill when proof of eligibility is provided to the City.  The discount is proposed to replace the lower rate structure currently provided to senior residential customers and will be effective March 1, 2019.

Our first-ever Mayor’s Book Club features Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Wonder is the story of a boy with craniofacial difference and his struggles to find acceptance in school. The sensitive issue of bullying is handled in a way that is educational and entertaining for middle-grade readers through adults. Read the book and join us for a spirited discussion. Overdue Fines

Overdue Fines at the Library

Earlier this year at a MetrOPAC library meeting the hot topic of discussion was ending overdue fines.   This is an area of policy being reexamined in the library world.

To clarify the difference between a fine and a fee:

  • Fines are punitive charges for overdue material.
  • Fees are for library services and products such as copying, printing, material replacement costs, etc.

Fines were originally enacted to prompt folks to behave in a responsible manner and return late material. However, it is important that fines do not create a barrier to access to users, especially the economically challenged and youth.

Some area public libraries that have recently eliminated library fines are Haltom City, Plano, Benbrook, and Burleson.

The Fort Worth Library is considering changes also.

Heart Health Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.
To lower your risk:

  • Watch your weight.

  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.

  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

  • Get active and eat healthy.
